Vertebra of the Month – Atlas (C1)

Each month, we’ll be highlighting one of the bones in the spine!  Caring for your spinal health is one of our main goals at Woodbury Spine, and we want our patients to understand the ways the spine and nervous system connect to and control the functioning of all parts of the body!

“When in sickness, look to the spine first.” ~Hippocrates

Atlas C1

Atlas (C1)

The atlas, also known as C1, is the very top/uppermost vertebra in the spine. The upper cervical spine is extremely important in Chiropractic because EVERY nerve fiber in the spinal cord ascends and descends through this vertebra. Being sure this bone is in proper position is essential for your overall health and wellbeing.

If you have subluxations at the level of C1 (it’s not aligned properly in your spine), you may experience symptoms such as headaches, hormonal imbalances, sinus issues, high blood pressure, dizziness, and much more.

Be sure to ask your Woodbury Spine doctor today if your atlas is subluxated or not!
